Captain America: Civil War Movie Review

This is mainly an art blog, but seeing as how comics and comic book movies have been inspiration for my art, I figure I can blog comic book movie reviews sometimes. Here's my most recent one: My dad and I saw Captain America: Civil War . I figured it was going to be a great movie before I saw it, and I don’t think either my dad or I were let down. It was phenomenal! The special effects were great. There’s one scene that’s especially awesome but I won’t spoil it. The cast is great. It was great to see Paul Rudd as Ant-Man again. You probably know by now that Spider-Man was in it, and the way he was introduced was excellent! Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther was amazing. He had some great scenes in the movie, maybe some of the best. The story is great. It’s based on the Civil War storyline in the comics. This movie is epic! I think it’s the best Marvel movie yet. There was drama, action, comedy, and some heartfelt moments in this movie. I can’t wait to own this movie on Bluray or...

Movie Review: Ant-Man

I have a deviantART page, which I have a link to above. Sometimes I'll post reviews on deviantART. My dad and I saw Ant-Man , and I posted a review for the movie on there. You can check it out here . Here's a hint about the review: Ant-Man is awesome!

Review - Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron is epically awesome! James Spader gave Ultron a lot of personality. As far as "the twins," the Maximoff siblings, it makes sense now why they joined Ultron against the Avengers, and it wasn't his personality. Their tragic past brings them into conflict with the Avengers. I thought it was cool that Jim Rhodes and Sam Wilson are in the movie. They have substantial parts in it. The romance between Bruce Banner and Natasha Roma ... noff was pretty interesting. There was lots of action throughout the movie. There was lots of Hulk! I think the way the action was choreographed in this movie and the previous one is brilliant and exciting. I think it's on a much bigger scale in this new one. It was great to see The Vision introduced in this movie. Paul Bettany did a great job of bringing him to life. Ultron is a tough villain who keeps coming at the Avengers. All in all, it's an action packed movie with some touching moments, some humor, some drama...

Movie Review - X-Men: Days Of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past is an excellent movie! It's an epic film with an ensemble cast. In my opinion, X-Men is always awesome. Add to that time travel, and it's beyond awesome! It's cool to see some of the cast from X-Men First Class , and some of the cast from the other X-Men movies, come together. It's exciting! It's all about the fate of mutant, and even human kind. Mystique plays a very important part in this movie, and I think that's cool. There has never been much focus on her in the movies. Jennifer Lawrence's performance as Mystique is really phenomenal. Wolverine also plays a big part in this movie and I think it's always cool to see him. Hugh Jackman has done a fantastic job of translating Wolverine to film over the years. James McAvoy gives a very dramatic portrayal of Professor Xavier. I could go on and on. There are lots of characters in this movie, and they're portrayed greatly by their actors. Omar Sy as Bishop, Halle Berry as S...

Movie Review - Godzilla (2014)

Godzilla is back, and bigger than ever! This time he's a hero. This movie is epic. There's a history behind the hero and the villains in this movie. There are epic battles that cause mass destruction. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays a very important part in this movie. He's the human hero in this. The cast also includes Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, and others. This movie is packed with action and moments of drama. Godzilla is HUGE! This is a very well-made movie. And it's different from the 1997 film. I personally liked that one, but this one is more sophisticated I think. Brian Cranston also stars in this movie, and I think you'll be surprised where his character ends up in the movie. To see Godzilla on the movie screen is an amazing experience. I think the fact that it's on the movie screen helps to make you feel like you're in the movie. This movie is epic, amazing, and thrilling! I very much recommend you check out Godzilla . It's definitely freaking ...

Movie Review - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a great follow-up to the first movie! It really captures the spirit of the comics. Spider-Man wearing a fireman’s helmet and using a fire hose is the kind of thing I would expect in the comics. The characters are great. Jamie Foxx did a great job as Electro. His portrayal of a nerdy Spider-Man fan turned super villain was fantastic. Dane Dehaan as Harry Osborn was great. He was sympathetic but also there was a mean streak to him. I thought Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich, a.k.a Rhino, was really cool. The mechanical suit is different from the comics, but it works. Returning cast members Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Sally Field once again gave great performances. There’s one character in particular that I think everyone should watch out for. Her name is Felicia, and if she’s who I think she is, she may return in future movies. There’s a lot of humor and drama and action in this movie. Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, is going through...

Art Books

I was thinking about art books earlier. There are a lot of great how-to books on art. They cover drawing, painting, etc. Some that come to mind for comic book artists are Comics And Sequential Art by Will Eisner, How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema, and any book by Christopher Hart. You can learn a lot about how to draw comics from those books. Those guys are experts, and they know a lot about how to draw comics.

Follow-up To Movie Review Of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Last night, I posted a movie review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier . It's a great movie! If you're interested in that or any of the Marvel movies, I recommend watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC as well. It ties into the movies from Marvel Studios. So, what happens in the Marvel Studios movies may have an impact on the show. At least sometimes it does. It's a cool show!

Movie Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

My dad and I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier tonight. It's awesome beyond words!!! I'm never sure how much to tell about a movie without giving too much away. But, basically there's something going on in S.H.I.E.L.D. and it's up to Captain America and friends to stop it. There's lots of action, a great story, and an amazing cast. Captain America wears his, I guess they call it a stealth suit, for a good portion of the movie. But he also wears a slightly modified version of his suit from Captain America: The First Avenger for a good portion of the movie. Anthony Mackie as Falcon is awesome, and hopefully they're including him in Avengers: Age of Ultron . Samuel L. Jackson had a great part in this movie as Nick Fury. It was great to see Scarlett Johannson as Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow in it. It's great to see her get more screen time so her character can be fleshed out more. Cobie Smulders was great. And in my opinion Chris Evans always d...

Christopher Hart's Assignment #3, on deviantART

Image
"Worried Face" Here's my submission for Christopher Hart's "Assignment #3." For this assignment, he showed us a confident-looking character he drew. He wanted us to draw the character with a worried expression. This is what I came up with. I drew the basic look of the character, but I drew him more in my style. I wanted it to be clear that I was drawing that character as the assignment says to, but try to avoid making it look too much like Christopher Hart's style. I usually draw a more pronounced jaw line, but I kept the original jaw line for this character, as I did with the head shape in the submission I titled "Goofy Face." I figured his eyebrows would be tilted. I thought to add more intensity to it, I'd express his worry through his mouth as well, and I added some sweat to his temple. I think this drawing turned out pretty well. You can see Christopher Hart's journal post, on deviantART, about the assignment here .

Christopher Hart's Assignment Number 2, on deviantART

Image
"Goofy Face" I just submitted my work for an art assignment from Christopher Hart. You can see the work above. The assignment is at on deviantART, here . Basically, he showed a cartoon face he drew, and he said to redraw it. He told us to make up our own features and expression. I drew a goofy-looking guy with crossed eyes and buck teeth, and kind of a funny hairdo. It's a little like Ed Grimley's slicked up point on the front of his hair. I drew it in more of my own style. This is the second assignment from Christopher Hart, and I think he's doing more of these. I think it's a cool idea.

Jack with 3D Glasses

Image
"Jack with 3D Glasses" This is a picture I drew last night. It's Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board , with 3D glasses on. I'd give it a 3D effect if I had the tool to in photo shop. I'm still experimenting on my characters with the techniques I learned from Christopher Hart's Modern Cartooning . I made Jack's neck longer here. I drew his ears further up than in the redesign, but I may stick with the ears further down when I actually start doing new strips. I haven't gotten around to writing  new strips because I've been busy with other things. However, I'd like to get a start on them soon. I still need to consider whether I'm going to stick with the redesign for Matt Kirby (which I haven't blogged yet), or do another version. As for this drawing, I think it turned out pretty well.

The Drawing Board Redesigns - Jennifer and Jack

Image
"Jennifer Kyle Standing" "Jennifer Kyle Standing 2" Here are a couple more Jennifer Kyle drawings using the techniques I've learned from Christopher Hart's book, Modern Cartooning . I like the low-waist pants on her better than the high waist ones I drew in a previous drawing . I also did another redesign of Jack Miller, which you can see below: "Jack Miller Redesign 2" I tried to make him appear taller, and a little older. I like how these drawings turned out. I like the simplified and stylized look of the characters. I think the techniques in Christopher Hart's book, which again is titled Modern Cartooning , will work great for my comic strip.
