Sketch A Day: Sketch #30

Image
Sketch A Day Sketch #30 Here's a sketch I did of a cartoon vampire. Considering that October is near, I've been thinking about Halloween stuff from time to time.

Happy Halloween 2015!

Image
"Frankenjosh" Here's another version of my "Frankenjosh" drawing for Halloween. I posted an earlier version of this for the 30 Day Drawing Challenge . This might be my only post for this week, so I'm posting an early Halloween post. Happy Halloween!

October

For this post I pretty much just thought I'd acknowledge that it's the first of October. It's the start of a new month, and the holidays! If you're an artist, this month, the month of Halloween, might inspire you to draw some scary monsters, jack-o-lanterns, or something like that. I might do that myself. Another great thing about October is the fall weather that usually comes along. So, everyone have a happy October!

Happy Pizza Month!

Image
"I Love Pizza"  It's October now. Apparently, not only is Oktoberfest and Halloween this month, but also it's Pizza Month! And apparently pizza is so awesome that it needs more than one day of celebration. Speaking of pizza, Little Caesar's has a great pretzel pizza. It's got cheese sauce instead of marinara.

September's Coming To An End

As I was trying to think of a title for this post, I remembered that Green Day song. I think it's titled "Wake Me Up When September Ends." September is just about over. I'm excited about it because of two things. The first thing is that I get to change my Doctor Who calendar to the Tenth Doctor. The second thing is that October is the start of the holidays. It would be a good time to do some drawings of werewolves and things like that. It would also be a good time to read some scary books and watch scary movies. Watching horror movies is how I celebrate Halloween. I go more for the classic type of horror movies like The Wolf Man . As far as books, I've read a book by Stephen King titled Cycle of the Werewolf . It's a short book, but it's great. It's got art by Bernie Wrightson in it. I believe Wrightson has also illustrated a Frankenstein story. I'm trying to think of other artists who have done horror art. I checked out a book before, about drawi...

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween, everybody! Here is an alternate version of my artwork for day 20 of the "30 DAY ART CHALLENGE." The actual artwork I did for that day is a one-panel comic. This is without the panel border and speech balloon and all that (Terri) .  Works Cited Terri. 30 Day Art Challenge . Terri. http://terribly.deviantart.com/art/30-DAY-ART-CHALLENGE-330788048

Slimer the Angel

Image
Here's Slimer pretending to be the perfect little angel. He sneaked a snack from the Ghostbusters fridge. I was actually thinking of watching the two Ghostbusters movies this month, since it's the month of Halloween. I might also watch my DVD of episodes of The Real Ghostbusters , the animated show based on the movies. I figured this drawing would make for a good Halloween-themed post. I hope everybody is enjoying their weekend. Have a great Sunday!

Frankenstein's Monster

Image
I've been watching Halloween-type movies a lot this October. I've especially been watching a lot of the classic Universal monster movies. My favorite is The Wolfman . I really enjoyed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein . I watched Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein . I'm planning on watching Dracula , The Mummy , and The Creature from the Black Lagoon next. Those movies are really cool. There are a couple of inconsistencies I've noticed. They don't ruin the movies for me, but I thought they were kind of odd. One was the first transformation scene in The Wolfman . Lawrence Talbot takes off his shirt and has an undershirt on underneath. In the next scene, he's the wolfman, but with a dark, button-up, long-sleeved shirt on. He would have had to have been putting on the dark shirt as he was transforming. In Frankenstein , Henry Frankenstein's fiancee had blond hair, maybe a little shorter than shoulder length. In Bride of Frankenstein, she has long, da...

Jack Miller as a Werewolf

Image
October is here, and that means fall, or autumn, and Halloween. I haven't trick or treated, or put on a costume, since fifth grade. I always really enjoyed Halloween, but now that I don't do that stuff anymore, I celebrate a different way. I watch Halloween-type movies. I watched both the 1958 and 1986 versions of The Fly last weekend. I watched Twilight Zone the Movie Thursday. Last night I watched the original The Wolfman with Lon Chaney, Jr. Tonight I plan on watching The Wolfman remake. I drew this drawing of Jack Miller as a werewolf this week, and today I digitally colored it. I'm hoping to wrap up the date story in issue 16 or 17 of The Drawing Board , and starting on some Halloween-themed issues. Everybody have a happy Halloween!

The Drawing Board #14 is Almost Complete!

Image
I'm almost finished with The Drawing Board #14. I think I might have it up in the next few days. I've completed the details, and I've got three panels colored. I figure I'll wrap up the date story in the next one or two issues. I want to get ready for October. I'm thinking of doing Halloween-themed issues next month. I'm also thinking of doing a story focused more on Jack's comic strip. So, that's what's going on with The Drawing Board .

Karen Gordon

Image
This character is inspired by gimmicks (and I mean that in a good way) on TV shows like, for example, Wilson on Home Improvement . Wilson entire face wasn't shown on the sitcom, which starred comedian Tim Allen, until the closing credits of the final episode of the show. Throughout the show Wilson's top or bottom half of his face would be covered by something, or as in Halloween episodes, his face would be completely covered by something like makeup. I'm thinking of having Jack usually talk to her by e-mail or phone, or something like that. Karen, a high school friend of Jack's, will basically be a voice or text throughout the comic strip. At some point I might reveal what she looks like. I might do that before, and if, the comic strip ends. It depends on when I feel like it's more beneficial to the strip to have her seen and not just heard, or read. Like Violet only being referred to by her first name, for now I'm keeping what Karen looks like a mystery to crea...

Josh Ralls, Artist Movie Poster

Image
Here's a mock teaser poster for a documentary, which doesn't exist. I just did it for fun. I was thinking about what more I could do with my art logo, and I thought it would look good on a movie poster. I used a photo shop program, and put my logo on a cork board background and used clip art of thumb tacks to put on my logo. I gave the white background of the logo a drop shadow. Lastly, I put the text on there. I thought about making it for a biopic where actors would play me and people I know. If I did that though, I might want to show the actors on the poster. Halloween has come and gone, and it's November now. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving.

Josh Ralls, Artist Wallpaper

Image
Since Halloween is over I decided to use a new desktop wallpaper, the previous one being a Wolf Man desktop wallpaper. I got the idea to do this wallpaper and I went with it. As you can see, it reflects the design of my blog. I also did the version below because I figure it's better to have the icons in the white space instead of the space where the tiled pictures are. They are both 1024 x 768. I think these turned out really cool.

Happy Halloween!

Image
My sister and I did a couple art projects for a Halloween thing at her work place. The one above is a collaboration between her and I. She made the body, and I made the hands and face. She made sort of a styrofoam pyramid and put yellow and black cloth over it for the shirt and it's black zigzag stripe. I completely painted the pumpkin and hands with acrylic paint. She hot glued the parts of the body to keep it together. This was the first project we started on. The second was the window, which you can see below. I also used acrylic paint on that. I didn't paint a jack-o-lantern face on the pumpkin or anything like that because my sister wanted to keep it up there for Thanksgiving also, and a regular pumpkin works for both. Happy Halloween!

The Man Behind the Mask

Image
I was watching the Friday the 13th marathon on AMC last week and I decided one night to draw Jason Vorhees. The title of this drawing, "The Man Behind the Mask," is a nod to Alice Cooper's song for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives . The music video for that song is my first, or one of my first, memories of the Friday the 13th franchise. I seem to recall my parents watching possibly that very movie in the series in the '80s. I never got into it at all until recently. I'm generally more into the classic type of horror. Werewolves, vampires, Frankenstein's monster, that sort of stuff. Halloween is two days away. I might watch one or two more Halloween movies. Happy Halloween!

Stegogator

Image
I had a dream about this creature. It was mainly an alligator, but it had plates on it's back like a stegosaurus has. It's been awhile since I had the dream or did the drawing, but the red eyes were either part of the look of the creature in the dream, or I just added that because I thought it would look cool. I thought this would be good for a Halloween post. Halloween is Sunday, so the Halloween themed for my postings will be coming to a close soon, if not with this post. Everybody have a happy Halloween!

The Scarecrow

Image
Here's an artwork I did in 2005 of the Batman villain the Scarecrow. I figured it would make for a good Halloween themed post. I mostly digitally airbrushed it, and I digitally drew the stitches on the mask. The whole thing is digitally actually. I tried to make good use of darkness in the drawing, kind of having the Scarecrow in the shadows. As a bonus, I'm posting the first draft of my award-winning "Lucky Heart" artwork.

Howling in the Night

Image
This drawing, from 2007, started out as just a pencil drawing of a werewolf head. I actually didn't draw a body on it. I just put the area where the body would be in complete darkness. I drew it on paper first, then scanned it and colored it. I'd gotten a Wacom tablet two years before and this was my third year coloring on computer. Before I colored it, my dad mentioned that he thought this drawing would make a good tattoo. I think you'd have to decrease the amount of the dark background. This continues my Halloween themed posting. If not this month, next month I may try to do things like comic book covers, etc.

Werewolf

Image
I did this werewolf drawing back in 2008. I scanned it and digitally colored it, using a fur pattern for the werewolf itself. I plan on all my posts this month being Halloween themed, although some, like this one, may feature a bonus artwork. The bonus in this post is a sequel to my artwork titled "Superman - The Blur Logo", which if you do a search in the search bar at the top of the page, you'll find a post for that one which also includes the one I did of the Zod logo. Check out "Superman - The Blur Logo 2" below. This is not an exact depiction of the Superman symbol on Clark's new red leather jacket on Smallville , but it's basically what it looks like. At first I thought the zipper going down the front of the jacket, through the symbol, looked like it disrupted the symbol. But the more I saw of it actually works really well. It helps if he doesn't pull the zipper down past the top of the symbol. This picture makes a perfect 1024 x 768 desktop wa...

Who Ya Gonna Call?

Image
This would have made more sense if I posted it before the "Ghostbusters!" post, but here it is. This is one of a type of artwork I call "sketchback" drawings, because I drew it on the back cover of a sketchbook. I drew it in pencil and then went over it with Sharpies. I never thought about it before, but the Ghostbusters movies would actually make for good Halloween movies. I guess I never gave it any thought because it's a horror comedy, and not just horror, but then so is Shaun of the Dead .
