"Jennifer" Here's a color version of an artwork I blogged some time ago . This is Jennifer Kyle, a character from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I digitally colored it awhile back. I only did flat colors, but I may give the colors more depth at some point. Happy holidays!

"Jack Miller Goof Jeans Ad" I did a Goof Jeans ad with my Drawing Board character Jennifer Kyle recently. I decided to one with another one of my Drawing Board characters. "Jack Throwing A Ball" Here's an old picture I drew of my character Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I was practicing drawing Jack in motion.

"Jennifer Kyle Goof Jeans Ad" Here's my second drawing of Goof Jeans, a parody of jeans ads. This one features Jennifer Kyle from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I might do one with Jack Miller. I could have a comic book sticking out of his back pocket. I could do ad parodies or spoofs for other types of products as well. It's something for me to consider.

"Jack Miller Portrait" I practiced my line work with this earlier tonight. This is of course Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board .  I'm working on improving my lines. One thing I did differently with this was that I didn't draw the lines below his eyes. I think it may have have made some of my characters look older than they were supposed to. I also left off the thick outline that I've been drawing cartoon characters with. I'm not sure which is better, a thick outline or a thin one. But anyway, I did this partly as practice, and partly just to have something to draw.

"Jack Miller, Cyborg" I was thinking about the Marvel Comics character, Deathlok, and his appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this week. I think cyborgs are really cool, so I got excited to see Deathlok on the show. Michael Peterson has become an especially interesting character lately. It was cool to see his cybernetics on last night's episode. I'm sorry to say I hadn't been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for awhile. But, I plan to watch regularly again. And I may try to do some catching up. I believe they said last night that episodes are available on ABC's site and on TV on demand. So, I think I'll be playing catch up for awhile. This drawing is inspired by the character Deathlok. I thought it would be cool to drawing Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board , if he were to become a cyborg. I think it turned out pretty cool.

"The Drawing Board Cast" I've been thinking about what to do next with The Drawing Board . I haven't done anything on it lately because I've been focused on other things. But, it would be cool to get some TDB comic strips done this year. I was in fact just thinking about some ideas for The Drawing Board. We'll see what happens. I haven't done as much art as I wanted to do at the start of the year. But, I hope to do a lot of art throughout the year. It's a new year. A new year for art!

Various drawings for The Drawing Board redesigns I drew these drawings back when I was redesigning the characters for my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . The characters on there are Avery Ellis (with the goatee), Violet, and myself. Then there are, of course, the titles. I always put the title at the top of each comic strip previously. I used Impact font. For the post-redesign strips, I'm thinking of using something like Comic Sans. Coming up with story ideas for the series, post-redesign, is challenging. I'm trying to come up with some really funny stuff. Yesterday, I started reading The First 20 Years of Monty Python , by Kim "Howard" Johnson. I'm hoping that book gives me some inspiration for my comic strip. I'll see how that goes. All in all, I hope to outdo myself with the series, post-redesign.

"Violet 2" Here's a follow-up to yesterday's blog post . It's more Violet, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . This is sort of like album art, if Violet made an album of music. The only thing is, if it were a CD cover, it would have to be more square. Besides being a follow-up to yesterday's post, it's also titled as a sequel to the first character design, which you can see in said post.

"Violet Redesign" This is my redesign of Violet, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I drew her in a similar pose to the one I drew her in in the original character design, which you can see below: She has a narrower head, with a sharper jaw line, in the original one. I decided to try a different look for her head in the new design. The body is basically the same, but more simplified. So, basically this new design is very similar to the old one in some ways, and different in other ways. This new design keeps very much of the older character design, with some modifications.

"Jack with 3D Glasses" This is a picture I drew last night. It's Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board , with 3D glasses on. I'd give it a 3D effect if I had the tool to in photo shop. I'm still experimenting on my characters with the techniques I learned from Christopher Hart's Modern Cartooning . I made Jack's neck longer here. I drew his ears further up than in the redesign, but I may stick with the ears further down when I actually start doing new strips. I haven't gotten around to writing  new strips because I've been busy with other things. However, I'd like to get a start on them soon. I still need to consider whether I'm going to stick with the redesign for Matt Kirby (which I haven't blogged yet), or do another version. As for this drawing, I think it turned out pretty well.

"Jennifer" This is Jennifer Kyle, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I drew this earlier tonight. This was kind of a spontaneous drawing. I came up with the idea as I went along. The flowers took quite a bit of time. I listened to some music while I drew it, as I often do with my art. It was a very enjoyable artwork to work on.

"Avery Ellis Redesign II" This is an alternate redesign for Avery Ellis of my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . I was listening to some music and drawing tonight. I redrew Jennifer Kyle and then Avery. With Jennifer, I just drew her torso shorter. With Avery, I decided to try a different body type. I think I like this one better than the previous one. I'm not sure if I'll consider it the final one though. I finished using the paper in the drawing pad with the Jennifer drawing, so I decided to use the inside back cover for Avery. I like to draw on the back covers of my sketchbooks and drawing pads. I've thought of another possible body type for Avery as I've been writing this. So, there may be another version of the Avery Ellis redesign to come.

I was just looking at a previous blog post before posting this one. It reminded me that I think Jennifer Kyle's lower legs are too thin in the redesign. I'll want to tweak them. I want to possibly start writing Drawing Board strips in place of what I've written, or for another month. I've got the paper for my artwork of Ginger. It's builder's paper, 24 inches by 104 inches. It's a roll. I think the next step is to cut out the right size sheet for the artwork. Then, I'll draw the picture before starting to use the oil pastels. After reading about Vincent Van Gogh, I decided to choose a picture with bright colors for the artwork. It's kind of a collaboration because my dad took the photo that I'm doing the oil pastel work of. In the recent past, I've thought about doing various types of artworks to put together as a portfolio. I may do those for a tangible portfolio, as well as a portfolio page on here. "Avery Ellis Redesign" Here's another redesign for my Drawing Board comic strip. This one is of Avery Ellis, Jack Miller's boss. I might want to go back to the small dots for the eyes. I started out with those, but then I made them big. I might experiment with another body shape for him, or I might stick with this one. I haven't decided yet. There are more character redesigns to come.

"Jennifer Kyle Standing" "Jennifer Kyle Standing 2" Here are a couple more Jennifer Kyle drawings using the techniques I've learned from Christopher Hart's book, Modern Cartooning . I like the low-waist pants on her better than the high waist ones I drew in a previous drawing . I also did another redesign of Jack Miller, which you can see below: "Jack Miller Redesign 2" I tried to make him appear taller, and a little older. I like how these drawings turned out. I like the simplified and stylized look of the characters. I think the techniques in Christopher Hart's book, which again is titled Modern Cartooning , will work great for my comic strip.

"Jennifer Kyle Redesign"  Here's another Drawing Board redesign. I think the shoulders might not be perfect. I drew her with high-waist, '70s-style pants. I'm thinking I'd like to go back to drawing her with the low-waist ones. I like the techniques that I've learned from Christopher Hart's book, Modern Cartooning . They make my cartoons simple but stylish. It makes the process of cartooning smoother. These techniques make my cartoon drawings less detailed, but in a good way. I like how the redesigns are going.

I haven't got a drawing to post today. I've been busy with some other things this week so I haven't done a lot of drawing. I'm planning on looking into finding the right paper for my Ginger artwork that I mentioned in a previous post . According to Drawing: A Complete Course, by Jenny Rodwell, a "strong paper" works best for pastels (Rodwell, 123). Oil pastel would be my first choice for the artwork, colored pencil being second. I don't do a lot of oil pastels, so it seems like the thing to try for it. I'm going to be working on redesigns for my Drawing Board comic strip. I want to apply what I've learned from Christopher Hart's book, Modern Cartooning , to it. I also want to think about ideas for more strips in the series. I want to come up with some really funny stuff. I want to try to top what I more or less consider to be the first volume of the series. Another thing I think I'd like to do is maybe further study Vincent Van Gogh, a...

"Jack Miller Redesign" This is a sort of rough redesign of Jack Miller, from my comic strip titled The Drawing Board . This is one of my endeavors to apply what I've learned in Christopher Hart's Modern Cartooning to my cartooning. The shoulders and feet are a little uneven. Other than that though, I think he's looking good.

"Jack and Jennifer Experiments" Here's more from what I discussed in my previous blog post. It's some doodles of Jack Miller and Jennifer Kyle. There, in the picture, are two tryouts on Jennifer, and then to the far left is one of Jack. I'll be continuing to try out the techniques I've learned from Chris Hart's book, Modern Cartooning , on my comic strip.
